Course information and advice is available in a number of ways. Visit the Administration desk within SMIT, where you can find printed information regarding all courses and a current timetable and a schedule of fees. If the information you require is not on hand please ask the Administration Staff for assistance.

BASIC RADAR

The Northern Territory Marine Act requires that persons in charge of vessels in NT waters meet prescribed certification requirements.

The Certificate
The Basic Radar Certificate of competency is a pre-requisite qualification required by the Marine Safety Branch for a Master 5/Skipper 3.

The Course
The Basic RADAR course offered at Seafood & Maritime Industries Training Ltd. is delivered full-time over 3 days. It is recommended that the candidate has knowledge of Coastal Navigation prior to this short course.

Course content & training comply with SITP training package & TDM Training package (Certificate III)

Recommended Items :
- Ruler
- Basic scientific calculator
- Parallel ruler
- Highlighter pen

Assessment
(a) 2 hours written examination - pass mark 60%
(b) Practical and/or oral examination.

At the end of the course, the candidate will be able to demonstrate knowledge of fundamentals of radar and ability in the operation and use of radar, and in the interpretation and analysis of information obtained from the equipment, including:

- Factors affecting performance and accuracy;
- Setting up and maintaining displays;
- Detection of misrepresentation of information, false echoes, sea return, etc.;
- Range and bearing;
- Identification of critical echoes;
- Application of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea,
  1972;
- Basic understanding of use of radar for navigation and collision avoidance.
