MED 3 Certificate
The Northern Territory Marine Act requires that
persons in charge of vessels in NT waters meet prescribed certification
requirements.
All enquiries regarding applications and eligibility for persons
wishing to apply for and/or undertake the examination for a Certificate
of Competency as Marine Engine Driver (Motor) Grade 3 should be

Documentary evidence of approved length of service on vessels not
less than 75kw propulsion power must be presented to and assessed
by Marine Safety Branch before sitting exams. Contact Marine Safety
Branch.
The Certificate
The MED 3 certificate allows the holder to take charge of the propulsion
machinery on a vessel:
- of less than 250kw operating OFFSHORE but within a limit of 100
nautical miles to seaward
- of less than 500 kw operating INSHORE but within a 15 nautical
miles to seaward
The Program
The MED 3 program runs for 4 (four) days full-time - with Marine
Safety Branch written & oral exams organised by candidate. The
training complies with Units of Competency specified within Certificate
III in the Seafood Industry (Fishing Operations) SFI20204 Course
content & training comply with SITP Training Package & TDM
Training Package.
NOTE This is NOT a course or training program. It is designed to prepare candidates for the marine qualification (COC) issued by the NT Marine Safety Branch only. This preparatory program is NOT suitable for beginners and those without previous work experience with vessel’s machineries.
An additional pre-requisite short course below is to be completed
and competencies achieved prior to eligibility for issuance of a
certificate of competency by the Marine Branch:
ELEMENTS OF SHIPBOARD SAFETY :
- Senior First Aid 2 days
- Fire Fighting 1 day
- Personal Survival Technique 2 days

Marine internal combustion engines and their fittings, shafting and propellers, preparing for use; |
| (b) |
Precautions necessary for the prevention of fire or explosion associated with the use of petrol, LP gas and distillate, and the charging of batteries; |
| (c) |
The action that should be taken in the event of fire or explosion, including the use of fire fighting appliances; |
| (d) |
Cooling water and fuel systems, bilge pumping arrangements, including precautions against back-flooding; |
| (e) |
Care of electrical systems including batteries. Safety procedures when working on low and medium voltage AC and DC systems. Fuses and circuit breakers; |
| (f) |
Steering gear and deck machinery; |
| (g) |
Fuel consumption; estimation and calculation. |
The Training Company
Seafood & Maritime Industries Training is a non-profit, industry
based provider established in 1995. It provides a range of training
courses as well as being involved in national projects for the development
of maritime competencies & recognition.
Facilitators, trainers/tutors are highly experienced and qualified
seafarers from both national and international fishing and maritime
industries.
