All classes are conducted in an adult learning environment. This means that YOU are responsible for your learning, being on time for classes, bringing everything you need for the day, and being READY TO LEARN.

Course Information & Advice

Course information and advice is available in a number of ways. Visit the Administration desk within SMIT, where you can find printed information regarding all courses and a current timetable and a schedule of fees. If the information you require is not on hand please ask the Administration Staff for assistance.

THE NATIONAL SEAFOOD INDUSTRY TRAINING PACKAGE SFI 00 INCORPORATING
CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY AS
MASTER 4/SKIPPER 2

The Certificate
The Master 4 certificate allows the holder to be in command of a commercial vessel less than 35 metres in length in trading operations up to 200 nautical miles offshore. The certificate also allows the holder to be second in command of vessels of varying lengths in prescribed ranges up to 600 nautical miles offshore.

The Skipper Grade 2 qualification is the ³fishing² version of the Master Class 4. It allows command of the same length vessels in the same operating areas where the activity is commercial fishing rather than charter or trading operations.

Candidates must first confirm eligibility for assessment and issue of certificate with Marine Safety Branch before any exams can be taken.


The Program
The SMIT course is an intensive 8 week program. Candidates can participate in all or part of the course. For those who need to get up to speed, it is advisable to take part in:
- 2 weeks Master Class 5 Coastal Navigation refresh. Cost $100.

Then start at Master Class 4 level. Those feeling confident enough may go straight to:
- 6 week intensive study.

The Training Company

Seafood & Maritime Industries Training is a non-profit, industry based provider established in 1995. It provides a range of training courses as well as being involved in national projects for the development of maritime competencies & recognition.

Facilitators, trainers/tutors are highly experienced and qualified seafarers from both national and international fishing and maritime industries.
