All classes are conducted in an adult learning environment. This means that YOU are responsible for your learning, being on time for classes, bringing everything you need for the day, and being READY TO LEARN.

Course Information & Advice

Course information and advice is available in a number of ways. Visit the Administration desk within SMIT, where you can find printed information regarding all courses and a current timetable and a schedule of fees. If the information you require is not on hand please ask the Administration Staff for assistance.

Course Timeline

GMDSS courses are run on a regular basis at our Darwin (Northern Territory) Facility.


The Laboratory is equipped with the most up-to-date and state-of-the-art
GMDSS and Radio Communications equipment.


This course is approved by the Australian Maritime Safety Authority Ð AMSA.


All courses are facilitated (Col Bolin, formerly RMIT Ð Chief Instructor/Assessor) under AMSA approval in accordance with the Safety Of Life At Sea (SOLAS) Convention, STCW (95) and Commonwealth or State Legislation.


All participants will be assessed by the AMSA accredited assessor and issued with the AMSA Certificate for GMDSS and General Radio Operator Ð international recognition.


GMDSS REVALIDATION ONLY


For revalidation, candidates need to attend the Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday sessions of the second week of the GMDSS course (examinations on the Wednesday).
This complies with AMSA stipulated course duration of 21 hours.
