All classes are conducted in an adult learning environment. This means that YOU are responsible for your learning, being on time for classes, bringing everything you need for the day, and being READY TO LEARN.

Course information and advice is available in a number of ways. Visit the Administration desk within SMIT, where you can find printed information regarding all courses and a current timetable and a schedule of fees. If the information you require is not on hand please ask the Administration Staff for assistance.

CERTIFICATE II IN THE SEAFOOD INDUSTRY (Fishing Operations)
DECKHAND


The Certificate
The Certificate II Fishing Operations (Deckhand) is an eight week course for people who want to work at sea in the commercial fishing industry. It is a general entry level course designed for people with little or no commercial fishing experience. Preference is given to people who can demonstrate a genuine interest in fishing and/or the sea. Candidates need to be 16 years of age.

What will I learn?
At the end of the course, graduates have the basic competencies necessary to work at sea. It will take another 6-12 months experience on-the-job to become a competent practitioner. The course includes a trip to sea to practice the skills learnt and to experience the life of a professional fisherman firsthand.

The Course
The course comprises of 20 Units of competency and by the end of the programme graduates are able to:
- perform various knots, hitches and splices and know where and when to use    them
- use and maintain rope and wire cables
- apply basic food handling and safety practices
- understand the international rules for the prevention of collisions at sea
- demonstrate application of distress and emergency procedures
- operate and understand distress procedures for HF and VHF marine radios
- carry out basic maintenance procedures for engine room and deck machinery and    various types of fishing gear
- meet workplace health and safety requirements
- maintain the safety and security of the vessel
- maintain, prepare, deploy and retrieve various types of fishing gear
- operate and maintain outboard motors

The Training Company
Seafood & Maritime Industries Training is a non-profit, industry based provider established in 1995. It provides a range of training courses as well as being involved in national projects for the development of maritime competencies & recognition.

Facilitators, trainers/tutors are highly experienced and qualified seafarers from both national and international fishing and maritime industries. Certificates Achieved

- Senior First Aid
- Fire Fighting
- Personal Survival Technique
- Elements of Shipboard Safety

A minimum of 3 courses will be offered per year.

Materials Required
- closed shoes
- pen or pencil
- swag or sleeping bag, sunglasses, sunscreen and hat - for sea trip

Class workbooks will be supplied. Food, bait etc will also be supplied for the sea trip.
