CERTIFICATE OF COMPETENCY AS A COXSWAIN
Course Timeline 2.5 weeks Full-Time
The Northern Territory Marine Act requires that persons in charge of vessels in NT waters meet prescribed certification requirements.
The Certificate
The Coxswain certificate allows the holder to be the master of vessels up to 12 metres in waters up to 15 nautical miles seaward of the coast. It does not have to be periodically reviewed as it is valid in perpetuity and is recognised nationally.
Documented evidence of at least 12 months approved sea service in small vessels must be presented and approved by Marine Safety Branch in order to sit the exam. (Copy of letter from Marine Safety Branch stating eligibility must be given to smit administration) Please contact the

The Course
The Coxswain course runs for 2.5 weeks full-time. The course incorporates both theoretical and practical elements and includes Engineering.
Additional courses need to be completed before issue of Certificate of competency as Coxswain from Marine Safety Branch. These include:
- M.R.O.C.P. (Marine Radio) - 2 days
- Elements of Shipboard Safety:
- Senior First Aid - 2 days
- Fire Fighting - 1 day
- Personal Survival Technique – 2 days
Note : All certificates (senior first aid, personal survival technique, fire fighting, Ess & radio) can be collected approximately one week after completion of courses & full payment of fees is received.

The Training Company
Seafood & Maritime Industries Training is a non-profit, industry based provider established in 1995. It provides a range of training courses as well as being involved in national projects for the development of maritime competencies & recognition.
Facilitators, trainers/tutors are highly experienced and qualified seafarers from both national and international fishing and maritime industries.
