All classes are conducted in an adult learning environment. This means that YOU are responsible for your learning, being on time for classes, bringing everything you need for the day, and being READY TO LEARN.

Course Information & Advice

Course information and advice is available in a number of ways. Visit the Administration desk within SMIT, where you can find printed information regarding all courses and a current timetable and a schedule of fees. If the information you require is not on hand please ask the Administration Staff for assistance.

About SMIT


Seafood & Maritime Industries Training Ltd. is a not-for-profit, industry based provider established in 1995. It provides a range of training courses as well as being involved in national projects for the development of the maritime certificate curriculum.

Seafood & Maritime Industries Training Ltd (SMIT) is a progressive Registered Training Organisation providing training for people involved in maritime transport, seafood (fisheries), hospitality and tourism industries as well as oil and gas.

Courses are accredited by the Australian National Training Authority. The qualifications gained through SMIT are credit transferable and articulated all around Australia.

Core training includes certification courses for marine qualifications in accordance with the National Standards for Commercial Vessels ( Uniform Shipping Laws code ) for Masters, Skippers and Engineers for vessel operations.

SMIT can facilitate STCW ë95 (Standards for Training & Certification for Watchkeeping Convention & Code) courses which includes AMSA approved GMDSS and Safety courses.

SMIT is endorsed to facilitate the new national Seafood Industry Training Package and offers Certificates II (deckhand/farmhand) and III in the Seafood Industry (Fishing Operations). Following are some of the units in the Certificate II: Basic Food Handling/Processing & Safety Practices, Communication in the Seafood Industry, Maintain / Prepare / Deploy & Retrieve various types of fishing gear.

Other programs include Marine Radio Operators Certification and SATCOM C Satellite Communications endorsements.

SMIT now offers training and certification of Quality, Environmental and Safety Management Systems in the Northern Territory and surrounding areas.

English language, literacy and numeracy support is offered to learners who do not speak English as a first language - and to other groups who require assistance to become proficient in the use of industry specific language.

Professional development programs for trainers, supervisors, executives and managers are available and every effort is made to provide for innovative and flexible methods of training. The Organisation can customise courses for industry, community and individual requirements and deliver at your work place or at SMIT facilities.

The teaching staff are highly trained assessors & work place trainers who also hold professional qualifications in the maritime and seafood industries.
